INSTRUCTORS TRAINED TO TEACH AND MOTIVATE YOU!
When we think back to the teachers, coaches, and mentors that made an impact in our lives, we know that they understood more than the material they were teaching. They understood how individuals learn and how to motivate us. They also embraced the importance of serving as role models in all aspects of their lives.
All of our trainers are skilled martial artists, but that is only the first step. The Tiger Rock trainer program develops trainers who transform a martial arts class into an educational experience where no one sits on the bench and all students feel safe and are empowered on their own martial arts journey. Tiger Rock has the highest requirements and standards for its trainers including an apprenticeship program, comprehensive written, physical and oral exams, criminal background checks, and continuing education requirements to incorporate the evolution of sports science and teaching techniques. Tiger Rock also provides special training in ADHD, ADD and other behavior disorders so that we can help children with these challenges be more successful.
All classes are taught by a Tiger Rock certified trainers who follow a detailed plan which ensures that each class is exciting and covers the material needed to develop great martial artists. Additional Junior Honors and Youth Leadership members assist with the classes to provide each student the individual attention they need.
A FEW WORDS ABOUT MASTER OVERSTREET AND THE ACADEMY MOTTO
David Overstreet is the main trainer at the Academy and is an Alamogordo native who is proud to bring the Tiger Rock Martial Arts to his hometown. He is a Sixth Degree Master in TaeKwonDo. TaeKwonDo is a Korean martial art known for its powerful kicks and punches as well as its aerial kicks. He is dedicated to continued development as a martial artist and as a trainer under the guidance of Senior Grand Master James C. Bailey. The Academy also has several adult trainers who can lead classes or class segments. There are also members of the Junior Honor and Youth Leadership teams who can assist younger students in class.
The primary philosophy of the Academy is found in our motto: Pursing Excellence, which means doing our best at everything. Simple principles guide us to being our best and achieving our goals. First, we must commit ourselves to achieving a specific and measurable goal on a set but flexible timeline. We can significantly increase our chances of achieving a goal if we have three types of people with us on the journey (those who have achieved the same or similar goal who can mentor us, those who share our struggle, and those who are looking to us to show them the way). These people are critical to our success when our struggles deepen and quitting is tempting. Second, we must actively pursue that goal and actively reject things that distract us. This is increasingly true in the digital age where our attention is continually pulled by easy options for short term gratification that we are told we deserve. We must reject those options and keep our attention focused on achieving our goals by making the required short term sacrifices so that we can enjoy true, long term satisfaction. Third, we must stay connected to the people in our daily lives that make our goals and lives meaningful. Without relationships to give our goals meaning, we will either lose our motivation or achieve a goal that no longer matters. Although it can be challenging in our most comfortable relationships, showing courtesy and humility to everyone may be the most important way to stay connected to people and to honor our most significant relationships.
"Mr. Overstreet is really a great instructor, for kids and adults as well. He has taught Mathis to always set himself new goals and to achieve those goals, not only in Taekwondo, but in all aspects of life...Mr. Overstreet has influenced me as well, especially my work with children at school and in Taekwondo. He has taught me how to be a confident and caring leader to the children by using positive reinforcement to create a positive learning. environment." - Alexandra L. (read more)
