OUR PROGRAMS PROVIDE AGE SPECIFIC BENEFITS.
The programs at Overstreet TaeKwonDo Academy are designed to benefit you on a number of different levels. Review the information below to find out how our programs benefit your age group.
For Tiger Cubs (ages 4 to 5)
Increase Concentration and Discipline
Four and five year olds can be rambunctious and enthusiastic which may cause them to struggle with focus at home or school. Our Tiger Cubs classes give them a structured activity which requires them to remain attentive. Paying attention and being focused are skills that can be developed over time with proper reinforcement. Even our extra energy Tiger Cubs are able to be successful and can improve their behavior as they see the rewards of controlling impulses.

Develop Social and Communication Skills
For many of our Tiger Cubs, our classes are one of their first social experiences. They are able to start working on the basic skills that will help them succeed in school and other social activities. Even for our more socially experienced Tiger Cubs, we help them develop the social intelligence that we all need to navigate in our personal relationships (e.g learning to be aware of other people’s feelings and how our behavior can impact and influence them).
Reinforce Positive Values
Nothing that we teach will conflict with the values that you are teaching your children at home. We have a specialized Tiger Cub life skill program that addresses the issues that are important to them (e.g. controlling their emotions, learning to control frustration and to keep trying when success does not come easily, and introducing themselves).
"This program is important on so many levels for children - teaching dedication, physical fitness, character and rewarding good grades. If your child excels here, they can accomplish any dream." - Diana M. (read more)
Develop Strength, Conditioning, Flexibility and Coordination
Most Tiger Cubs do not realize that they are getting a great work out, but they are. Given the trends in health for our children, it is important to have them involved in an activity that addresses the critical need for physical fitness and teaches them that physical activity can be fun.
Provide an Introduction to TaeKwonDo While Developing Gross Motor Skills.
The TaeKwonDo we teach in the Tiger Cub classes is the same TaeKwonDo that they will learn when they graduate into the Junior class. We just use different drills, words, and activities designed for their level of physical and mental development.
Great Fun
Our Tiger Cub classes can be the most entertaining half hour in our instructors’ day. We have as much fun teaching the classes as the Tiger Cubs have taking it.

For Juniors (ages 6 to 11) and Youth (12 to 15)
Our 6 to 15 year old students have similar needs, but they have different physical and mental abilities as well as different social needs so we train them differently to maximize their time in class.
Develop Self-Esteem and Confidence
One of the most critical components of a child’s success is confidence. Without it, they may limit themselves by either not taking on new challenges at all or by not giving 100 percent in the activities they do try because they do not think that they will be successful. As they get older, a low self esteem makes them more vulnerable to peer pressure. A child with a low self esteem is desperate for peer acceptance and may be more likely to go along with bad ideas than a child who has a strong self image. The positive learning atmosphere of our classes and the progression through our rank system build confidence and help reinforce a strong self image.
"I have watched my daughter grow from a shy little girl of five to a more responsible and self-confident nine year old." - Alicia D. (read more)
Teach Discipline and Self Control
The students in our Junior classes may be challenged by impulse control and by a lack of understanding as to how their behavior impacts others. Therefore, we emphasize the importance of self-discipline and the need to improve our social intelligence.
Helps Channel Aggressive Energy
Our Juniors and Youth have plenty of energy. Our classes give them an outlet for releasing that energy in a positive way.
"The staff and instructors at the Academy treat our kids like their own and are a great influence on them. This is the best after school activity offered in Alamogordo for an affordable price!" - James B. (read more)
Encourages Positive Work and Academic Values
Our Juniors and Youth learn to accept the consequences of their actions in all aspects of their lives. In order to test for black belt, our Junior students must complete the Character Super Star program which requires them to understand and apply all seven of the ITA tenets (such as self control, integrity and courtesy) at home, school and at TaeKwonDo to their parents’ satisfaction. We are also able to communicate with their academic teachers through the ITA’s Partners in Learning program to give them an extra incentive to do well in their academic environment (link to itaonline.com/community).
Develop Artistic Expression and Strength, Conditioning, Flexibility and Coordination
Our Junior and Youth students are growing up in the digital age with excessive screen time (television, computers, cell phones, and video games) and fast food. Kids no longer play outside after school until it is dark and their parents call them to come inside. All too often they have been inside all along logging in more screen time. We get them unplugged and give them a complete workout that they enjoy doing.
"I have seen my daughters grow in respect, socialization, physical fitness, and sef confidence." - Mariana D. (read more)
Develop Realistic Self-Defense Skills
Our Junior and Youth students learn to deal with bullies in accordance with school policies. They also learn how to defend themselves when no other option is available.
Great Fun and Friends
Our Junior an Youth students will not receive the benefits of the program at home on the couch. We make the classes fun and exciting so that they want to come to the next class with their friends at TaeKwonDo.

For Adults (16 and up)
Maintain a High Level of Physical Fitness, including Strength, Cardiovascular, Flexibility and Coordination.
Our Adult students are primarily motivated by a desire to improve their overall fitness level. For all ages this includes, building new muscle mass, flexibility, and cardiovascular fitness. Some of our Adult students have always been athletes, and they enjoy the thrill of competing in our tournaments as well as the physical fitness aspect. Some have not done any physical activities at all but want to fight the effects of aging such as decreased range of motion, bone density, and strength. We recommend cross training (e.g. cycling or jogging) in addition to classes to supplement their individual fitness needs. Medical issues related to bad backs or knees, diabetes, or arthritis may call for a modification of the curriculum but, in most cases, will not preclude participation in our program.
"...to keep my body in good shape....better control for body and mind....enjoy the practice during classes and tournaments..." - Michael M.
Help with Stress Reduction
Our Adults experience stress reduction during the class in two ways. First, the workout itself burns energy and aggression and replaces it with positive energy and relaxation. Second, since the classes are more mentally challenging than weight lifting or running on a treadmill, you are forced to take a break from your worries while you are on the mat.
Reinforce Positive Values
All of us lead busy and sometimes hectic lives. We are bombarded by digital media (e.g. television, movies, computers, video games, text messages) and unhealthy messages (e.g. fast food, quick fixes, and me first/do what feels good attitudes). TaeKwonDo and our other programs offer all of us a chance to unplug and get back in touch with being the best person we can. We will discuss relevant and universal values and principles which do not conflict with our students’ personal beliefs and how we can apply them in our own lives.

Develop Confidence and Inner Strength
Our Adult students develop the confidence to stand up for what is right, regardless of what might be popular or convenient. This continues the long heritage of martial artists being leaders and servants in their communities.
Provide an Avenue for Artistic Expression
Our Adult students express their individuality in their performances. This is a positive and constructive outlet for individual expression without losing the commitment to the larger group.
"As a full time mother, taekwondo has given me the opportunity to get out of the house and do something for myself if only for a few hours a week. Taekwondo is a great release for me physically, mentally and socially!" - Sarah H. (read more)
Develop Realistic Self-Defense Skills
Our Adult students certainly appreciate the ability to defend themselves and their families. The ITA’s professionally designed curriculums allow students to use various levels of force on different training equipment and use light contact for in class sparring. This develops students who can enjoy a life long martial arts journey without inappropriate aggression or risk of injury.
Great Fun and Friends
Our Adult students are more accustomed to doing things that are good for us even if they require some perseverance. However, the adult classes are taught in a way that everyone enjoys the fellowship and the shared journey. You will never regret making the decision to come to class!
