My name is Alexandra Lachmann and I am a PE teacher. In spring of 2003 I started looking for some kind of sport for my 7 year old son Mathis. As a German mom, I had, of course, soccer in my mind, but Mathis didn’t like soccer. So I decided to take the plunge, and I signed up for a trial class for Mathis in Mr. Overstreet’s Taekwondo Academy. I had some reservations, because I associated Martial Arts with aggression and violence.
But what I saw in the next weeks was totally different from what I had imagined, and just a few weeks later I signed up myself. Since that time my son Mathis and I have never stopped training Taekwondo.
Taekwondo has influenced our life a lot, and it has altered it in many positive ways. Mr. Overstreet is really a great instructor, for kids and adults as well. He has taught Mathis to always set himself new goals and to achieve those goals, not only in Taekwondo, but in all aspects of life. Mathis has learned to be responsible for his actions, and to treat others and himself with respect. Mathis, very shy and without self-confidence back then, has turned into an awesome and self confident 13-year old. He is currently a second degree black belt.
Mr. Overstreet has influenced me as well, especially my work with children at school and in Taekwondo. He has taught me how to be a confident and caring leader to the children by using positive reinforcement to create a positive learning environment.
And after all, Taekwondo is fun, and it makes it possible for my son and me to do something together as family. And that is something special!
