Our daughter was introduced to Tae Kwon Do in March 2006; she was in the first grade. It only took one Buddy Night and my husband knew that this was a skill that our daughter would enjoy learning. I have watched my daughter grow from a shy little girl of five to a more responsible and self-confident nine year old. The first goal that my daughter made for herself was to become a black belt. When she became a member of the Tiger Team, this aspect of Tae Kwon Do allowed her to visualize her goal just as they recite in the Black Belt Success Pledge. Being on the Tiger Team has also opened her eyes to the importance of respect to those who are trying to help her in life due to the fact that one of her responsibilities on the Tiger Team is to assist in the other classes.
Our daughter is the oldest of the three girls that we have and the oldest of our four children. The tenants that have been taught to our daughter have helped us raise her at home in how she responds, reacts, and talks to her sister’s during the “fun” sister situations.
The tenants have helped her achieve success in school as well. Tae Kwon Do stresses the importance of doing her best in school. As a teacher in the community, I have seen several students in my classroom that have participated in Tae Kwon Do. I can verify that the children do understand and apply the tenants and rules of Tae Kwon Do, and it helps them remain focused in the classroom as I remind them of what they have learned in Tae Kwon Do. Tae Kwon Do and the school working together help these children to be more responsible people in school and in the community.
