My son, Jack, has been a member of the Overstreet Taekwondo Academy since the summer of 2005. He progressed through the Cub Program and into the Junior Program and is now a first degree, level 3 black belt. In the summer of 2008, Jack joined the Grappling Program so that he could learn ground-fighting techniques to supplement his Taekwondo training. Jack’s participation in these martial arts programs has benefitted him not only the physical arena, but in areas of social and emotional development, as well.
When Jack attends either a Taekwondo class or a grappling class he gets a healthy physical workout. While he gets some exercise, he is learning valuable lessons in self-defense and this has given him a great sense of self-confidence. Having reached the level of black belt filled him with a sense of accomplishment and pride. Attaining his black belt also gave him the wisdom to know that with effort he can accomplish many things in other areas of his life. Knowing that he can still work toward higher levels of accomplishment in the martial arts gives him an opportunity to set goals and strive to meet them.
I am particularly impressed with the Academy’s emphasis on the Tiger Rock tenets and how they must be applied in all aspects of life, not just in Taekwondo. Numerous times Jack and I have talked about how the tenets are important in everyday life, whether it was something to do with school or how one should treat his friends and classmates.
From the time Jack was just five years old and a Tiger Cub, his instructors have always been warm and supportive. Jack has thrived in the structured environments of his Taekwondo and grappling classes; he has also had a lot of fun. He has particularly enjoyed learning the new skills being taught in his grappling classes. Enrolling Jack in martial arts at Overstreet’s Taekwondo Academy has given him some of his most beneficial experiences to date.
