We offer TaeKwonDo classes for Tiger Cubs (ages 4 and 5), Juniors (ages 6 to 12), and Adults. TaeKwonDo is our main focus; however, our Academy offers training in other martial arts, including Gracie-style Jiu-Jitsu, HanMuDo, and Weapons (sword and short stick). We also offer Tom Patire’s Personal Protection courses . These personal protection courses are not martial arts classes but are stand alone protection courses that can be taught to employees, youth groups and teams, and social organizations at our Academy or at another location. (read more) Our Academy motto is Pursing Excellence which means doing our best at everything. Simple principles guide us to being our best and achieving our goals. First, we must commit ourselves to achieving a specific and measurable goal. We can significantly increase our chances of achieving a goal if we have three types of people with us on the journey (those who have achieved the same or similar goal who can mentor us, those who share our struggle, and those who are looking to us to show them the way). These people are critical to our success when our struggles deepen and quitting is tempting. Second, we must actively pursue that goal and actively reject things that distract us. This is increasingly true in the digital age where our attention is continually pulled by easy options for short term gratification that we are told we deserve. We must reject those options and keep our attention focused on achieving our goals by making the required short term sacrifices so that we can enjoy true, long term satisfaction. Third, we must stay connected to the people in our daily lives that make our goals and lives meaningful. Without relationships to give our goals meaning, we will either lose our motivation or achieve a goal that no longer matters. Although it can be challenging in our most comfortable relationships, showing courtesy and humility to everyone may be the most important way to stay connected to people and to honor our most significant relationships. In ancient times, martial artists like the Hwarang warriors of Korea lived by codes that went beyond fighting skills and required them to honor their parents and teachers and respect their friends. They would defend their villages when attacked, but they were also entrusted with governance during times of peace. Overstreet TaeKwonDo Academy has been working to continue this tradition since January 2001 by equipping its students with the skills to protect themselves and others but also to be better citizens. We need the courage to stand up to those who would use force to achieve their goals, but we also need the discipline to control our impulses and emotions, accountability for our actions, the health and energy to fulfill our obligations, positive values that recognize our obligation to help others, and relationships and connections with other people. |
